I have always been intrigued by the story of the women who approached Jesus' tomb on the Sunday morning after his death. They had just witnessed their leader, their teacher, and their Lord horribly executed before a large crowd. His wonderful vision of justice, love, and forgiveness had been shattered. They must have felt much sadness and feeling of being lost and without hope. Sometimes we find ourselves feeling very lost and alone, and we wonder if He is even there. Whenever I am in a situation that seems hopeless, that no end is in sight, and that evil seems to be winning out, I remember the Resurrection stories. For me, they are all the proof I need that death and despair do not win, but God is at work in the bleakest situations.
With this composition, I wanted to convey a conversation with God asking Him for the grace and strength to make it through even the darkest times. I wrote a melody that rises and falls in accordance to the text—particularly in the end of the refrain: “I’ll wait for you in the depths of my heart.” I wanted to create a surge of energy which conveys that even in doubt, there can be hope.
